What You Need To Know About Getting Rid Of A Vehicle After An Accident

When you are involved in an accident that renders your vehicle a total loss, you may wonder what you need to do with the car. It is often not a problem if you have insurance on it, but older cars not covered with full coverage insurance may end up in your yard, leaving you to sort out what to do next.

Selling Your Car

Your local salvage yard may pay cash for wrecked cars, but you will have to call and talk to the car buyers at the yard about what you have and how much damage it has. If there are good parts on the car that the salvage yard can sell, they will offer you something for the vehicle and typically come tow it away for you.

If the car is extremely old or there are not many good parts on it, the salvage yard may still haul it off, but they are less likely to pay you for it. The salvage yard will strip the car and sell the scrap metal, but without a lot of good parts to increase the income potential, they may not want to spend any money on it.

However, it is a good idea to call around to check with the car buyers at all the local yards because one may want it and be willing to give you a small amount of cash for the wrecked car.

Unwanted Cars

If your car was not in an accident but has been sitting and is in disrepair, finding an unwanted car buyer to assess the value and make you an offer for the vehicle can be beneficial. Like a wrecked car, the value may not be overly high, but many car buyers will base the offer for the vehicle on what they see that can be used from the car.

Cash for wrecked cars is more difficult to get because there is often less to salvage from them. Still, many car buyers will find running vehicles and look at the body panels, the accessories on the engine, and the drivetrain parts to determine if they are resealable.

If the car has been in an accident, many parts of the vehicle can be affected. Still, a car that is simply no longer running and is sitting in the yard or hiding in the back of someone's barn may offer some income potential that the buyer sees or a salvage yard can profit from. If you have recently replaced parts on the car, let the car buyer know that because relatively new parts can be a gold mine for the salvage yard parting out the vehicle and often can change the price the buyer is willing to offer for the vehicle.
